Grantee Highlight – Friends of the Palmer Public Library

PCF awarded Friends of the Palmer Public Library with a $3,588 grant to fund a new AWE Early Literacy Station for young children.

This interactive, child-sized computer provides STREAM-based learning activities (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) in a safe, age-appropriate environment. The AWE Early Literacy Station is a hands-on learning hub that builds foundational skills in literacy, problem-solving, and digital fluency, all without the distractions or risks of internet access.

The new station replaces one of three computers lost during the 2023 roof collapse that severely damaged the library building. The AWE stations are vital to families in our community. Before the collapse, children at the library completed an average of 775 educational activities per month on these devices.

For many parents, the library is more than a place to check out books. It’s a quiet space to work or catch up on tasks while their children learn nearby. This station supports both generations, giving kids a safe space to explore technology while caregivers focus on what they need to do.

Palmer Public Library plays a critical role in equalizing access to information and technology within our community and surrounding area. We help bridge the digital divide by providing computer access to patrons who live off-grid or who cannot afford internet at home. Children need to learn and practice computer literacy and digital literacy to thrive in today’s world.

Palmer Public Library serves over 8,000 registered patrons, with 80% coming from outside city limits. As a cornerstone of the Mat-Su Borough, the library helps bridge the digital divide for families who may not have access to internet or devices at home. Thanks to strong partnerships with nonprofits, volunteers, educators, and local businesses, the library continues to provide free programs that foster early literacy, digital skills, and life-long learning.

We are proud to support Friends of the Palmer Public Library in their mission to make learning accessible to all, and help restore the literacy stations. We’re investing in the growth, confidence, and curiosity of our youngest learners.
