We’re proud to support the Mat-Su Ski Club with a $4,400 grant to help revitalize the trailhead gathering area at Government Peak Recreation Area (GPRA).
GPRA is a hub for year-round recreation in the Mat-Su Valley, with groomed trails, family events, and programs for skiers of all ages and abilities. While the trails are well-loved and well-used, the trailhead area has fallen behind with its aging picnic tables that were warped, broken, and no longer safe.
The Mat-Su Ski Club is replacing those tables with sturdy, weather-resistant, ADA-compliant seating, creating a safer and more inclusive gathering space for families, skiers, hikers, and visitors of all kinds. These improvements will support everything from race day crowds to quiet breaks after a hike.
GPRA is the heart of so many of our activities. But the trailhead wasn’t keeping up with how often it’s used. These upgrades will make it more welcoming and accessible for everyone.
This project is rooted in community effort. The new tables are being installed by dedicated volunteers, and the upgrades align with broader plans by the Mat-Su Borough Parks and Recreation Department to refresh signage and improve user experience across the area.
GPRA already sees 200 to 1,000 visitors a day. The numbers speak to its importance in our region. By improving the trailhead’s functionality and appeal, this project not only enhances quality of life for local residents, but also supports nearby businesses in Palmer through increased foot traffic.
We’re excited to support the Mat-Su Ski Club’s work to create outdoor spaces that are safe, beautiful, and welcoming for everyone.
